Course Description
This course introduces students to the principles, philosophy, and practice of agricultural extension as a non-formal educational process that facilitates agricultural and rural development. The module examines the evolution of agricultural extension, extension systems, communication processes, extension methods and approaches, innovation diffusion, and emerging issues such as climate-smart agriculture, digital extension, gender, youth inclusion, and professionalism. The course equips students with the competencies required to plan, implement, and evaluate extension programmes that improve agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods.
Course Rationale
Agricultural extension is a key driver of agricultural transformation and rural development. In Kenya, extension services support the adoption of improved technologies, strengthen farmers' decision-making, promote sustainable natural resource management, and enhance household food security. With increasing challenges such as climate change, declining productivity, youth unemployment, and market volatility, extension professionals require sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills to facilitate learning, innovation, and behavioural change among farming communities. This module provides the foundational knowledge required for effective agricultural extension practice.
